CRAB’s statistical team is comprised of biostatisticians with a wide variety of backgrounds and expertise. Our team has decades of experience in the field of cancer clinical and translational research, with specific expertise in designing, analyzing, reporting, and presenting important findings in the field of oncology.

Antje Hoering, Ph.D.
President, Chief Executive Officer

ANTJE HOERING, PH.D., PRESIDENT, CHAIR and CEO of Cancer Research And Biostatistics, leads a group of approximately eighty talented and dedicated oncology research professionals all working towards our joint mission to help conquer cancer.

Dr. Hoering serves as the Consortium PI for the SWOG Computing and Data Management and the public-private LUNGMAP partnership. She is the lead statistician for the SWOG Myeloma Committee and an active member of the Myeloma Steering Committee for the National Clinical Trials Network. She is also an associate editor of the Statistics in Biopharmaceutical Research journal and co-editor of the third edition of the Handbook of Statistics in Clinical Oncology. She currently serves as the Independent Analysis Center PI for a Friends of Cancer Research sponsored collaboration (ctMoniTR) with leaders across multiple healthcare sectors and disciplines to investigate circulating tumor DNA as a potential monitoring tool to evaluate a patient’s response to treatment.

Antje also serves on the Board of the American Statistical Association and holds affiliate appointments at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Biostatistics Department of the University of Washington.

Chief of Strategic Alliances

JOHN CROWLEY, PH.D., CHIEF OF STRATEGIC ALLIANCES, brings four decades of experience in Biostatistics to his role as Chief of Strategic Alliances. He founded CRAB in 1997, and served as President and CEO until 2014. Dr. Crowley was the Director of the Statistical Center for SWOG, co-located at CRAB and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, from 1984 to 2012. He is the author or co-author of over 400 scientific papers and books.

William Barlow bio picture

William Barlow, Ph.D.
Senior Biostatistician

WILLIAM BARLOW, PH.D., SENIOR BIOSTATISTICIAN, is the lead statistician for the SWOG Breast Committee designing, conducting, and analyzing breast cancer clinical trials. In the latest study to be launched nationwide we will study whether the 21-gene recurrence assay can predict whether chemotherapy is beneficial in women with early stage node-positive, hormone receptor positive breast cancer. This study will include testing tumors in 9,000 women to identify 4,000 women who meet the requirements for the trial. Such biomarker evaluations can direct therapy – to this end he is involved in a grant with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to develop methods for testing biomarkers in the clinical setting. Other interests include breast cancer screening, other clinical prognostic and predictive markers, trial design, and efficient sampling methods for biomarker evaluation.

Katherine Nishimura, Ph.D.
Senior Biostatistician

KATHERINE NISHIMURA, PH.D., SENIOR BIOSTATISTICIAN, received her MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and her PhD in Epidemiology and Translational Science at the University of California, San Francisco. She has worked at CRAB since 2018 on the International Association for Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and is a member of the Pancreatic Cancer Research Team. Before joining CRAB, she worked at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases studying clinical data in Mexico City influenza cases, and at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center conducting genome-wide association studies on inflammatory traits among US minorities.

Emily Goren bio picture

Emily Goren, Ph.D.
Senior Biostatistician

EMILY GOREN, PH.D., SENIOR BIOSTATISTICIAN, Dr. Goren received her PhD in Statistics from Iowa State University and her MS in Biostatistics from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. At CRAB, she has worked on the International Association for Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Thymic Epithelial Tumors Staging Project and the ctDNA to Monitor Treatment Response (ctMoniTR) Project. Prior to joining CRAB, she worked at Seagen, Microsoft, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Her experience includes: design and analysis of early phase clinical trials, CDISC standards, ChIP-seq and microbiome data analysis, and population forecasting. She has contributed to multiple open-source software packages for R and python.

Rachael Sexton bio picture

Rachael Sexton, M.S.
Biostatistician Consultant

RACHAEL SEXTON, M.S., BIOSTATISTICIAN, Rachael Sexton has worked with CRAB for over 12 years, providing her expertise in clinical trial design, protocol development, data safety monitoring, statistical analysis, and results reporting. Her clinical trial experience spans Phase I to Phase III trials, in both liquid and solid tumor settings, and she has co-authored nearly 20 publications in various journals, including the Lancet, the Lancet Haematology and JAMA. She currently serves as a statistician on the SWOG Myeloma Committee and is part the SWOG Latin America Initiative, supporting clinical trial development and contributing to clinical trial training courses. She also supports several of CRAB's Clinical Research Services (CRS) trials.

ADAM ROSENTHAL, M.S., BIOSTATISTICIAN, received his M.S. in Statistics from Arizona State University, and has worked at CRAB since 2012. He is experienced in the analysis of clinical trial data and outcome data, and the development of biomarkers based on high-dimensional data. He also has experience working with trial data meeting CDISC compliance regulations.

Dori Giroux bio picture

Dori Giroux, M.S.
Biostatistician

DORI GIROUX, M.S., BIOSTATISTICIAN, received her Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has over 25 years of experience as a biostatistician. She began her career at ICI Pharmaceuticals (now Astra Zeneca) in the therapeutic area of heart and hypertension. She joined the SWOG (Southwest Oncology Group) Statistical Center in 1992 and collaborated with Principal Investigators in the design and analysis of Phase I-III clinical trials in brain, breast, melanoma, lung and gynecologic cancers. Later, she served as a Project Director for a CRO (Clinical Research Organization) called SERC (Statistical and Epidemiologic Research Corporation), consulting with clients regarding clinical testing of new, proprietary agents in biotechnology Ms. Giroux has been employed at Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) as a Statistician since 1998. As a longstanding member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee, she has performed statistical analyses, data management, and project management for the IASLC Staging Projects in lung cancer, thymic malignancies, and mesothelioma since the inception of each of these projects.

Megan Eisele bio picture

Megan Eisele, M.S.
Biostatistician

Starting in August 2022, Megan Eisele works as a member of CRAB’s statistical team supporting several important projects. Collaborating with Friends of Cancer Research, Megan investigates whether changes in circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) reflect response to cancer therapies and explores the use of ctDNA as an early endpoint for treatment response for regulatory decision making. Working with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, Megan contributed data cleaning, analysis, and interpretation to the 9th edition updates of the TNM classification for thoracic cancers, specifically contributing to updates proposed for mesothelioma and lung cancer. Megan was the primary statistician confirming the prognostic significance of cancer tumor cells spread through air spaces (STAS), supporting a recommendation to include STAS as a histologic descriptor for lung cancer in the 9th edition and ongoing investigation of STAS for the 10th edition. Megan received her Master of Science in Biostatistics from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Prior to her graduate studies, she was a middle school mathematics instructor for Oklahoma City Public Schools.
